The Olympics and Knitting

The Olympics are very proprietary about the rings and the name and any and all tie ins.  The knitting social media site, Ravelry was sent a cease and desist letter for an event called the Ravelympics and caused so much kerfuffle that the US Olympic Committee apologized not just once but twice...and yet knitting and the Olympics still have found some links.  Like this yarn bombing in North Yorkshire (do click that link it is impressive a bit of what you'll see.

Unfortunately this knitting graffiti has been removed but should you wish to knit your own favorite athlete, there is this pattern book.

In Lincolnshire they knit 200 meter running track that is being displayed at the Olympic village.

you can see a BBC video about it here.  In Birmingham they covered the pillars of the local art museum in the colors of the Olympic Rings.

So if you have forgiven the Olympic Committee and are knitting while watching the Olympics take some inspiration from these great feats of knitting.

August 1

Does anyone else see the year as having two beginnings?  There is New Year's Day (which is always sort of in the middle of things -- the middle of winter, the middle of the school year, we're tightening our belts after the lavish holidays and cutting back) and then there is the first day of school with its new school supplies, and new promises as we get to reinvent ourselves to the people we haven't seen all summer.  The new school year is always full of promise, you wake up full of excitement and apprehension, both.  Well, today was the first day of school and like that other mark of the new year it often makes me reflective -- what does the future hold, what changes would I like to make, what goals will I set and attain.

This year I will:

• fear less and hope more
• stress less and breath more
• complain less and laugh more
• take less and share more

It is going to be a good year, you know why I can say that?  Because I have decided that it will be so.  After quite a few years of watching the morale of my colleagues being chipped away until we came to a point where we are starting this year with one third of the staff being new, we all need a good year.  The kids deserve to come to school and have teachers who are happy to be there and whatever I can do to make that the building I work in, I am ready to do.

The new crayons with names like atomic tangerine, blizzard blue, wild watermelon and wisteria are purchased.  The pencils are sharpened.The notebooks with blank pages await stories.  The year holds great prospects and I see it and am ready for it!
