Trip to the Dentist

Dentist_hygiene_193776_tns
I hate going to the dentist. Now, I know that no one really wakes up and says "yea, I have a dentist appointment today" but my dislike of going to the dentist is deeper than that. As a young child I had a dental hygienist who was from Germany. I remember her [now I am pretty sure that my memory is faulty as we magnify our fears] as a very large and imposing woman. She would yell at you with her German accent and I am sure on more than one occasion she brought me to tears. You would often hear the formidable "you're not flossing" as you passed the exam room where she was working on some unsuspecting victim patient.   As an adult, I had a conversation with my father about her, thinking that my childhood fears might be unjust.  My normally stoic father commented, she was pretty harsh when cleaning your teeth.**  I was terrified of her and whether due to poor childhood dental hygiene, too much sugar, or bad genes, I cannot say, but I often had cavities and had to return for subsequent visits after my cleanings.  It seems I had fillings in most of my baby molars and quite a few of the permanent ones as well.  So, my trips to the dentist have been many.  I have always been afraid of needles and often have to be given extra shots of Novocain as I can still feel the drilling.

When I was in college I tried to remain faithful to my twice a year cleanings because I have always hoped that prevention would avoid more trips with Novocain and drilling (the truly traumatic part of dentistry).  Before heading out to Costa Rica for 5 or more months I stopped by my mother's dentist to have a check up.  He decided that my wisdom teeth (or at least one of them) was impacted and should come out before the trip.  He referred me to an oral surgeon. Because of the short window in which the surgery needed to be completed, there was no time to meet his or have a consult before he was to do the procedure.  The office where this oral surgeon worked was undergoing massive renovations and as I waited in the outer chambers of the office, loud clanging and banging could be heard from other parts of the building.  Next thing I know, the surgeon comes out with a monkey wrench in hand and introduces himself.  To hear him tell it, my eyes became as big as saucers and I never actually looked at him, only at the wrench until he had sense to explain that this was not part of his surgical kit.

So, I went for my 6 month cleaning last month and saw a new dentist (while I have fired my share of dentists over the years, this new dentist comes to me by way of retirement -- luckily, I get to keep the wonderful hygienist associated with the practice.  One of the pluses of the dentist who  had retired was that he felt that whatever made the visit easier for me made it easier for him and was quite free with the Nitrous Oxide, the new guy a little less so but he is coming around.)  The new dentist felt that several of my teeth that had been "watches" needed to be taken care of.  He had a few silver amalgam fillings he wanted to replace and a crown he thought I needed as one of my molars had cracked.  That is three additional appointments that I have had over the past month.  I won't go into any of the details (like when the dentist walked out in disgust because my gag reflex is so keen that I had ruined the first mold for the crown) since they are all still a little too fresh.  However, I did a bit of self medicating.  I bought some sock yarn (kind of a lot considering how little yarn I have purchased lately).  There is some Socks that Rock, a sock of the month club (or two), a Celtic sock kit, Regia silk and some trekking.  I will take pictures and post them tomorrow to share my new acquisitions.  I will spare you the picture of my new crown.Jasmine_072

**As an aside, I was telling my current hygienist about my "apprehensive" nature as a dental patient and mentioned this chapter of my childhood dentistry at a practice (although my dentist has long since retired) that still exists in town.  She said that she works at that practice once a week and the German hygienist is still there.  One of her favorite stories is when she was passing an exam room and over heard the following exchange.

Hygienist hands patient a tissue.

Male Patient:  What is this for?

Hygienist:  Spit or tears, vhatever!

Apparently after more than 30 some odd years (and I don't remember her as a young woman) she has yet to develop a softer "bed side" manner.

fun in the mail

Jasmine_034 My mother never really took to knitting although I have taught her how.  I think she likes the idea of knitting better than actually doing it.  She has many other hobbies so I don't worry about it too much.  However, it would seem that she retains an interest in this craft due to my own interest.  She came across a contest which had as its prize a "skein of the month" club.  Jasmine_036

She sent out a few e-mails and soon found that she need not enter the contest and could just subscribe to the club.  However, there is that problem of not knitting.  So, lucky me, she signed me up.  The club is sponsored by Webs and is inspired by the book One Skein Wonders.Jasmine_040

Each month you are sent a skein of yarn, a pattern that can be completed with that skein of yarn and some other little trinket or gift from Webs.  This month's selection was a skein of Sheep Shop Yarn in Sheep 3.  This is a 30% silk and 70% wool yarn.  They also included the pattern Silky Leaves Scarf.Jasmine_041

I will have to cast this on soon to try out this new yarn and I look forward to surprises in the mail for the rest of the year!  Thanks Mom!!

Presents

First off I would like to recognize the sacrifice of all the veterans who have fought in this country's wars as well as those who served in peace time.  Thank you for your service to the country and the sacrifices you have made to carry out this service.

Totally unrelated to veterans' day is my recent yarn purchases.  I have been fairly conservative with buying yarn, as of late.  But with my birthday approaching I gave in to the siren song of the hand painted and dyed yarns out there on the web.

100_1729My first purchase was from Ball and Skein.  I bought three skeins which I don't seem to have the names of but they are fairly accurate below.  I think they might  be fallen leaves
100_1730 Atlantic,
100_1734and dress blues.  I then made a purchase from Dani at Sunshine Yarns100_1736100_1737100_1740 in Costa Rica, Indian Corn and Plunge
100_1741

and she included a free skein of a color called Pop.  They are calling my name and I would love to cast on for more socks as I have been wearing my hand knit socks all week but other than an occasional row on the Pomotomus sock, it seems all my knitting is focused on Jade, my NAKNISWEMO sweater.  I will give you an update on that tomorrow.

A rose is a rose is a rose

A good friend from late night and MDSW excursions has been putting a bug in my ear about Eunny Jang's Autumn Rose.  She mentioned it back in May -- a fair isle with shaping.  She brought the book in to Late night to continue to tempt me.  She posted about it on her blog and then she started a knit-along.  Well, I broke down and bought the kit fromTwo Swan's Yarn.  My saving grace was that the popularity of the kit had stripped the distributer of all of the stock of Old Gold the most prevalent color in the sweater so I had to wait an extra month and a couple of weeks ago, on a Thursday I came home to a box wedged between the front door and the storm door.  (In this day and age of air conditioning, I can never figure out when I should put the screen back in the storm door -- seems I have to change it four times a year.)  My kit had arrived.

100_1596

I let it sit on the coffee table for a day before opening it.  But the colors were beautiful and I am excited to start it but then there is so much else that I should be finishing at the moment. It may come out for swatching soon, we will have to see.

Since I promised pictures yesterday, here are my two purchases from the Fall Fiber Festival of Virginia.  They were both bought at the both for Knitting Notions from Nashville, TN. First, I bought a skein of sock yarn in a lovely semi solid called Thyme.

Picture_649_2 Picture_648 It is kettle dyed Classic Merino Supersock.  I also bought a shawl pin/hair stick which I wore in my hair today -- have you ever tried to take a picture of the back of your head?Picture_643

Picture_644I believe the wood is called Zebra Wood.  It really is lovely (something that might be tricky to tell from my pictures).

Mail love

I was going to post my finished monkey socks which were completed several weeks ago but I was distracted by the mail carrier knocking on the door -- with a package.

Picture_368_2

My mother sent me an e-mail last week that said keep your eyes open for a surprise in the mail.  Not having any clue, I didn't dwell on it too much but knew I had something to look forward to.  Imagine my surprise when the mail carrier brought me a package from Jimmy Bean's Wool.  I hadn't ordered anything from there.  I wonder what it could be -- then I remembered the e-mail from my mother, a non knitter for all intents and purposes (although I have taught her or maybe she learned on her own and I do have a wash cloth she made).  Hmm, what would she be doing on the Jimmy Bean site?

Well, it seems she got me some super cool Sox Stix, made by Lantern Moon.  What a great surprise!!

Picture_370_2 Thanks mom, you're the greatest!!

November 25: Prizes

Julie  had a random contest to encourage readers to tell her about their favorite finished object.  She promised the winner some sock yarn and I shared my favorite FO on a lark -- since I wasn't going to win anyway.  But I did and look what was waiting on my doorstep yesterday when I came home from driving "over the river and through the woods".
100_0855
Yes, that is lovely Koigu kpppm in color P316  a lovely mix of green, browns and tans.  I think I may make a pair of socks with feather and fan cuffs.
100_0861 But that is not all, there was also a lovely card of a magnolia flower from Virginia King and a camel tape measure.100_0862

It was a lovely surprise to come home to.  Thanks Julie.

November 13: Stitches haul part two

Greens and Blues were the theme

Jojo_1 Jojo2_1

This is 100% wool sock yarn called Melody from Jojoland.  This was a new yarn to me with color gradiations similar to trekking where there are two plies of different colors that slowly change to another color causing subtle striping.  I bought these two colorways for socks.

Yesterday I showed micro fiber ribbon from Tess Designer yarns.  Here is a picture without the flash -- the colors are somewhere in between the two.Tess4  I will be using there to make a couple of sleeveless (or short sleeve) tops to wear under a jacket for work.

The second picture was Caravan from Just our Yarn.  It is 65% wool and 35% camel down.  I bought all they had (which was 900 yards of sport weight).  I am not sure what I will do with it.  Here is a close up of the color with and without flash.Justouryarnflash Justouryarnnoflash2 It has been so cloudy it is hard to take a decent picture.

The last yarn yesterday was Blue Moon's Socks that Rock lightweight in County Clare.  I have been wanting that one since they put it in the banner on the website.  I also bought a few skeins of heavy weight that I needed for the log cabin blanket.

Update tomorrow on my weekend workshop with Kathryn Alexander.

November 12: Stitches haul

It is late and I just got home from a very long day that was great fun but I need to get to bed and I just lost a witty (I can throw in a little hyperbole, can't I) post about what I bought at stitches  but with the clock ticking towards midnight and an early morning tomorrow -- descriptions and links can wait until tomorrow.

November 10: Acquiring yarn

Jessie called me out in the comments a couple of weeks ago for buying yarn.  I have been trying to keep my acquisitions under control but it seems that my "unsettled spirit" is seeking a little yarn therapy.  However, while I still visit Elann and fill my cart, I navigate away before making the purchase.  However, when I am supporting a friend and fellow blogger...well, I can come up with all kinds of justifications.  And it was only three skeins.  But they are beautiful.
